Your hosts Robert and Meghan Micheau purchased the Kipling House in October of 2008. They met in Lower Michigan where Meghan attended culinary school.  Robert is originally from Gladstone; in fact his father grew up in a home on the same street as the Kipling House.  On a trip to the Upper Peninsula to visit Robert’s family they both fell in love with the Kipling House.  The couple married in April of 2008 and purchased the beautiful three story historic home.  Happy to be back in the Upper Peninsula, they would love to share their charming home with you.

The Kipling House was first built in 1892 by Eric Walberg an immigrant from Sweden.  Mr. Walberg saw the opportunity to capitalize on the New Blast Furnace and Chemical Plant that was established in Kipling in 1892 by Cleveland Cliffs International (CCI) the house was built as a boarding house for the workers.

There were six large boarding houses in Kipling at that time and the Kipling House is the last one standing. The house operated as a boarding house until 1924 then the Maki family acquired the home to accommodate their 15 children. The Maki family remained in the home until 1946, when Yelmer and Johanna Terinen bought the home and established apartments.

Ann and Ralph Miller bought the house in 1994 and started the renovation. They had purchased the home from Elsie Tervinen who had retired to a nursing home two years before. The goal was to bring the house back to its original purpose of welcoming guests. After three years of restoration the home was opened on June 15th 1997 as a bed and breakfast.

The Kipling house has welcomed guest from all over the world and continues today as a centerpiece in the community.
